What will you do as an AVP/VP, Network Automation and Reliability Engineer?
We are seeking a highly accomplished and hands-on Network Automation and Reliability Engineer with deep expertise in large-scale network engineering, automation, and observability. This individual will serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) responsible for designing, building, and maintaining automation frameworks that enhance the reliability, scalability, and security of GIC’s global network infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will combine strong foundational networking knowledge with advanced automation and coding skills, driving innovation across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. He/she is a senior technical leader who thrives on building, coding, and solving complex network challenges.
Strategic Leadership and Vision:
• Define and execute the long-term strategy for network automation, reliability, and observability across global data centers, cloud, and hybrid environments.
• Drive the transformation of network operations through automation, resilience engineering, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with senior stakeholders across Technology Group (TG) to align network strategy with enterprise architecture and digital transformation initiatives.
• Champion a culture of automation-first and reliability engineering across the network organization.
Network Automation and Engineering Excellence:
• Design, develop, and maintain production-grade automation frameworks using Ansible, Python, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Build reusable Ansible collections, Python libraries, and REST API integrations for network and security platforms.
• Implement GitOps practices for network configuration management, including version control, automated testing, and continuous deployment.
• Integrate automation workflows with enterprise DevOps toolchains (e.g., GitHub, Ansible, Terraform, ITSM tools).
• Develop automated validation and rollback mechanisms for network changes.
• Perform hands-on development, testing, and deployment of automation workflows in production environments.
• Act as the escalation point for complex network automation and reliability issues, performing deep-dive troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
• Evaluate and implement emerging automation technologies to enhance scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
Foundational Network Architecture and Operations:
• Serve as the SME for core network domains — routing, switching, firewalls, load balancing, WAN optimization, and hybrid cloud connectivity.
• Provide architectural oversight for critical network platforms including Cisco, Checkpoint, Palo Alto, F5, Zscaler, Symantec, and AWS.
• Lead modernization initiatives to ensure high availability, security, and performance across the global network.
• Drive capacity planning, performance optimization, and lifecycle management to maintain operational excellence.
• Establish and enforce network reliability standards, ensuring minimal downtime and rapid recovery from incidents.
Firewall and Security Automation:
• Develop and maintain automation for firewall policy management, rule lifecycle, and compliance validation across Checkpoint, Palo Alto, Cisco, and cloud-native firewalls.
• Integrate firewall automation workflows with change management and compliance systems (e.g., AlgoSec, ITSM tools).
• Collaborate with Cybersecurity teams to embed security controls and compliance into network automation and operational processes.
Observability, Tooling, and Reliability Engineering:
• Design and implement observability pipelines for network telemetry (e.g., streaming telemetry, SNMP, NetFlow, sFlow) integrated with Grafana, Prometheus, and ELK.
• Automate health checks, anomaly detection, and self-healing workflows using observability data.
• Collaborate with SRE and platform teams to define and implement network SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets.
• Develop automated testing frameworks for network configuration validation, compliance checks, and pre-deployment simulation (e.g., Batfish, NAPALM, pyATS).
• Implement chaos and resilience testing for network automation workflows to ensure fault tolerance and recovery.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Management:
• Collaborate with Cloud, Security, DevOps, and Application teams to ensure seamless integration of network services into enterprise platforms and workflows.
• Partner with Cybersecurity and Compliance teams to ensure automation adheres to enterprise security and regulatory standards.
• Manage vendor and service provider relationships, influencing technology roadmaps and ensuring alignment with GIC’s strategic direction.
• Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, providing clear insights into network performance, risks, and strategic initiatives.
• Mentor and upskill network engineers in automation best practices, coding standards, and tool usage.
Governance, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement:
• Establish governance frameworks for network automation and reliability, ensuring compliance with internal policies, regulatory standards, and industry best practices.
• Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as automation coverage, change success rate, and mean time to recovery (MTTR).
• Lead post-incident reviews, root cause analyses, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational resilience.
• Ensure comprehensive documentation of automation workflows, network configurations, and operational procedures.
What qualifications or skills should you possess in this role?
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Equivalent experience in large-scale enterprise network engineering and automation may be considered.
Experience:
• Minimum of 8–10 years of progressive experience in network engineering, with at least 3 years focused on automation, reliability, and modernization initiatives.
• Proven track record in designing and implementing enterprise-scale network automation frameworks using Ansible, Python, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Deep expertise in core networking (routing, switching, firewalls, DNS, VPN, BGP, OSPF) and hybrid cloud networking (AWS, Azure).
• Experience developing and managing AlgoSec or equivalent for firewall automation.
• Demonstrated success leading cross-functional programs involving DevOps, Security, Cloud, and Application teams.
• Strong background in observability, telemetry, and network performance monitoring.
• Explore and evaluate emerging technologies such as intent-based networking, network digital twins, and AI-driven network analytics to drive continuous innovation.
Technical Skills:
• Expert-level knowledge of network and security platforms (Cisco, Checkpoint, Palo Alto, F5, Zscaler, AWS, Azure).
• Strong knowledge of network protocols and technologies such as TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VPN, and DNS.
• Proficiency in Ansible, Python, YAML, and integration with CI/CD tools (GitHub, Jenkins).
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and GitOps methodologies.
• Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools (Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, Datadog).
• Deep understanding of network security standards (CIS, CSA CCOP) and compliance frameworks (MAS TRM).
Certifications:
• Advanced networking certifications (e.g., CCNP, CCIE, PCNSE) are highly desirable.
• Automation and cloud certifications (e.g., Red Hat Ansible Specialist, AWS Advanced Networking, Azure Network Engineer Associate) are a plus.
Soft Skills:
• Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels.
• Proven ability to work independently as a senior IC while mentoring others.
