Working at GIC gives you exposure to an extraordinary network of the world’s industry leaders. As a leading global long-term investor, we Work at the Point of Impact for Singapore’s financial future, and the communities we invest in worldwide.

Technology Group
We experiment, design, and lead a 24×7 global business where we support core capabilities in asset management, trading, investment operations, and risk management. We deliver secure, reliable, and integrated solutions, and provide insights on new, and emerging technologies.

What will you do as Engineering Lead, Compute, Virtualization, Storage & Backup?

This role oversees GIC’s core infrastructure layer for compute (bare metal, virtual), hyperconvergence, storage, and backup, spanning on-prem and hybrid/cloud environments. You will ensure these foundational platforms are robust, scalable, secure, and ready for containerized/virtualized workloads. The incumbent will partner closely with database, network, security, and application leads to deliver a unified, resilient infrastructure strategy.

Strategic Leadership & Vision

  • Develop and maintain a multi-year roadmap for compute, virtualization, storage, backup, and hybrid container hosting (on-prem, edge, cloud).
  • Drive the adoption of emerging technologies (software-defined, composable infrastructure, container-native storage), future-proofing GIC’s hosting platforms.
  • Shape how workloads move between on-prem and cloud, ensuring consistency, portability, and security baselines from the outset.
  • Collaborate with security teams to define and continuously update compute/storage baselines (including IaC, encryption, vulnerability management).

Engineering Execution & Delivery

  • Own design, build, integration, and capacity planning for compute/virtualization/storage platforms, leveraging IaC, automation, and DevOps practices.
  • Lead pilots/POCs of container hosts (Kubernetes) and integrate with networking, backup, and orchestration layers.
  • Oversee ancillary services (SFTP, MFT, certificate management), ensuring reliability and security.
  • Modernize storage/backup solutions (cloud storage, object storage, advanced backup) for high availability, disaster recovery, and secure data handling.
  • Partner with operations/SRE to meet SLAs, manage escalations, conduct root-cause analysis, and continuously optimize performance.
  • Work with application teams to deliver global solutions that minimize latency and maximize resilience.

Governance, Security & Compliance

  • Maintain consistent global architecture for compute/virtualization, ensuring interoperability across offices and clouds.
  • Embed security, compliance, privacy, and audit requirements from day one (RTO/RPO, regulatory mandates).
  • Implement continuous monitoring, advanced telemetry, and automated compliance checks to detect and remediate deviations.
  • Coordinate with security, risk, and compliance teams to meet GIC’s regulatory and operational requirements.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Management

  • Engage with engineering heads, operations, analytics, and AI/ML groups to prioritize initiatives, resolve architectural conflicts, and sponsor cross-domain programs.
  • Present strategies, trade-offs, and budget needs to executive stakeholders.
  • Partner with business units and MSPs, ensuring new platforms integrate seamlessly into existing operational models.
  • Collaborate with database/data operations, network, security, and application engineering to co-create integrated platforms fulfilling performance and scaling needs.

Talent & Culture

  • Attract, develop, and retain global talent specializing in compute, storage, virtualization, and backup engineering.
  • Foster a culture of knowledge sharing, automation-first, and innovation.
  • Define and manage KPIs (latency, cost, error budgets, time to market) for infrastructure.
  • Empower and mentor teams, driving continuous learning and building a strong pipeline of future leaders.

What qualifications or skills should you possess in this role?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 15+ years in compute/storage/virtualization engineering leadership, ideally in global, 24×7 environments.
  • Deep technical expertise in virtualization (VMware, KVM, Hyper-V), software-defined storage, backup & recovery, container infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Proven track record in hybrid cloud/container hosting solutions across both on-prem and public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure).
  • Skilled in DevOps, SRE, IaC (Infrastructure as Code), and modern delivery frameworks.
  • Strong history of infrastructure transformations, migrations, and modernization programs.
  • Solid security knowledge for compute/backup/storage (encryption, access controls, vulnerability management).
  • Understanding of network fundamentals, load balancing, and HA solutions for distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multi-region/vendor teams, budgets, and global standardization.
  • Innovative mindset, adept at driving cultural change and continuous improvement.
