SVP, Backup Engineer, Technology Group
Singapore, SG
GIC is one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds. With over 2,000 employees across 11 locations around the world, we invest in more than 40 countries globally across asset classes and businesses. Working at GIC gives you exposure to an extraordinary network of the world’s industry leaders. As a leading global long-term investor, we Work at the Point of Impact for Singapore’s financial future, and the communities we invest in worldwide.
Technology Group
We experiment, design, and lead a 24×7 global business where we support core capabilities in asset management, trading, investment operations, and risk management. We deliver secure, reliable, and integrated solutions, and provide insights on new, and emerging technologies.
Infrastructure & Cybersecurity Resilience (ICR)
We design, build, and secure the technology foundations that power GIC’s global investment operations. We aim to deliver resilient, scalable, and secure infrastructure that empowers our people and businesses to perform securely, efficiently, and effectively.
What will you do in this role?
- Own the architecture and roadmap for on-premises compute (servers, virtualisation and hyper-converged infrastructure, Windows and Linux builds). Do the same for backup and recovery across data centres, public cloud and SaaS (e.g., AWS, Azure, Microsoft 365).
- Review and approve compute designs from the hardware and operating system up, and push back on vendor and systems integrator designs that fall short.
- Engineer and operate the enterprise backup platforms (e.g., Rubrik, Commvault), covering design, upgrades, capacity, performance tuning and hardware lifecycle. Define retention policies with Records, Legal and Risk.
- Build cyber resilience: immutable and isolated backup copies, the isolated recovery and cyber incident environments, ransomware detection and clean-room recovery.
- Agree RPO and RTO targets with service owners, and run regular recovery and DR tests to prove them. Lead technical recovery during major incidents.
- Drive infrastructure risk remediation to evidenced closure, including audit findings, patching and protection against destructive actions. Automate backup compliance checks and reporting.
- Provide engineering oversight of the Enterprise Keys and Certificates programme (key management, certificate lifecycle, PKI, HSMs and post-quantum migration), working with security and cryptography specialists.
- Lead and develop engineers. Prioritise the build queue, keep standards, SOPs and the RAID log current, and make sure every critical area has a trained deputy.
Job Requirements
- Typically 12+ years in infrastructure engineering. This should include at least 5 years in enterprise backup and recovery, and at least 5 years leading engineers or major technical workstreams.
- Deep hands-on expertise with enterprise backup / restore solutions. Strong experience with comparable platforms (e.g., Veeam, Rubrik, Commvault NetBackup, Cohesity) will also be considered.
- Strong knowledge of on-premises compute: server hardware, virtualisation and HCI, and Windows and Linux design. You should know enough to challenge vendor designs.
- Experience protecting a broad range of workloads (VMware, Windows and Linux, SQL Server, Oracle, NAS and file data) on-premises and in AWS and/or Azure.
- Practical cyber-recovery design experience (immutability, air-gapping, recovery orchestration), and experience leading recovery during major incidents.
- A record in governance and procurement: writing strategy and project papers, evaluating tenders, and managing systems integrators against their contracts. You'll need clear writing for senior audiences.
- Scripting and automation skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python, REST APIs).
